Steps for Wisconsin Teen Drivers

Wisconsin uses a graduated driver license system, which means teens move through several stages from instruction permit to probationary license as they gain experience and demonstrate safe driving skills.

1

Enroll in Driver Education

Most Wisconsin teens start driver education around age 15, choosing a state‑approved driving school that provides the classroom instruction and behind‑the‑wheel lessons required for their instruction permit and road test. Arcade offers 30 hours of online or hybrid classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind‑the‑wheel driving, and in‑car observation. Explore our complete teen program options to find the right fit.

2

Obtain an Instruction Permit (Temps)

After starting a certified driver education course, teens may apply for their Wisconsin instruction permit by passing the knowledge and road‑signs test and meeting DMV identification and sponsorship requirements. Hybrid students may take their permit test onsite at any of our classroom locations.

3

Practice Driving

With an instruction permit, teens must log supervised driving practice with a parent, sponsor, or instructor to gain experience in daytime, nighttime, city, and highway traffic. Our Parent Care Program gives families the tools and guidance they need to make practice sessions productive and safe. Our tips on defensive driving strategies are a great resource to review together before each practice session.

4

Take the Wisconsin Road Test

When teens have met the age, practice, and driver education requirements, they may schedule a Wisconsin road test at the DMV to earn a probationary license. Read our 5 tips to pass your Wisconsin road test the first time and ask about our Road Test Package for car rental and test‑day support.
